1. Overview
Metal oxide arresters were high-tech products in the 1990s. It uses an oxygen-zinc resistor with excellent nonlinear volt-ampere characteristics, so the protection characteristics of the arrester on slopes, lightning waves, and operating waves are greatly improved compared to traditional silicon carbide arresters. In particular, zinc oxide resistors have good slope response characteristics, no delay for steep voltage slopes, low operating residual voltage, and no discharge dispersion. This overcomes the inherent shortcomings of silicon carbide arresters, such as the high steep slope discharge voltage caused by steep slope discharge delay and the high operating wave discharge voltage caused by large operating wave discharge dispersion, so that the protection margin under steep slopes and operating waves is greatly improved. Moreover, in terms of insulation coordination, the protection margins for steep slopes, lightning waves, and operating waves can be close to the same, thereby providing good protection for power equipment and thereby improving the reliability of protection. Zinc oxide arresters have the ability to absorb lightning overvoltage, operating overvoltage, and power frequency transient overvoltage.
Composite jacket metal zinc oxide arrester was a high-tech product in the 1990s. Made of integral silicone rubber molding, it has good sealing performance, excellent explosion-proof performance, is resistant to dirt and requires no cleaning, and can reduce the occurrence of wet flashes in foggy weather. It is resistant to electrical corrosion and aging, is small in size and light in weight, resistant to collision, and easy to install and maintain. It is an updated product of the porcelain sleeve arrester.

The standards implemented for product production are GB11032-2000 (eqv. IEC60099-4:1991), “AC gapless metal oxide arrester,” and JB/T8952-2005, “Composite-jacketed gapless metal oxide arrester for AC systems.”
