Using the good nonlinear volt-ampere characteristics of zinc oxide, the current flowing through the arrester is extremely small (microamp or milliamp level) under normal working voltage; when overvoltage acts, the resistance drops sharply, discharging the energy of the overvoltage and achieving a protective effect. The difference between this arrester and the traditional arrester is that it has no discharge gap and uses the nonlinear characteristics of zinc oxide to play the role of leakage and interruption.

For long-term use in the following abnormal conditions, the arrester needs to be specially made and should be specified when ordering:
- The temperature or altitude exceeds the standard (plateau, tropical, frigid, fully enclosed cabinet, close to electric furnace, etc.);
- There are serious moisture or corrosive gas impurities in the environment (water, salt fields, chemical plants, etc.);
